Dr. Maurice Benjamin uses gentle techniques, state-of-the-art technology, and customized treatments to restore patient smiles. Dental fillings are a small but essential part of the services we provide at our office locations in Manhattan, NY, and Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Benjamin uses digital x-rays to precisely identify minor to moderate decay and tooth-colored fillings to aesthetically repair damage.
Do You Have a Cavity?
While symptoms may vary from patient to patient, some of the most common ones include:
- Pain or toothache
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
- Tooth discoloration
If you notice any of these symptoms in you or your child, you should schedule a consultation as soon as possible. A cavity will only get worse with time: delaying treatment can lead to more serious oral health complications including tooth decay and eventually tooth loss.
However, while some patients will experience visible signs of decay, many cavities are hard to detect without the help of a dentist and advanced in-office technology. Consequently, visiting the dentist regularly is essential.
During your appointment, Dr. Benjamin will take a series of digital x-rays or 3-D imaging to determine the extent of your cavity. If your case of decay is mild to moderate, a dental filling can help you return to full oral health. However, more severe decay may require more involved treatments such as inlays and onlays or root canal therapy.
Choosing Your Materials
Based on your needs and budget, Dr. Benjamin can help you choose from several materials:
- Gold: Although these fillings offer superior durability and strength, they are more expensive than other materials.
- Amalgam: While less durable than gold, silver fillings are traditionally the least expensive restorative option.
- Composite resin: For patients who are concerned about the appearance of their smile, composite resin fillings provide an aesthetic option and closely match the color of your surrounding teeth.
Which material is most appropriate will depend on your budget and goals for treatment.
Video: The Importance of Dental Hygiene
At his New York dental offices, Dr. Benjamin emphasizes the importance of oral hygiene and educates patients about proper home care regimens.
At Your Appointment
After administering anesthetic, Dr. Benjamin will scrape away any decay on the tooth to prevent it from spreading to other parts of your mouth. He can then use the material of your choice to fill the area and restore shape and function of your tooth. If you choose a composite filling, Dr. Benjamin will harden the resin with a special light to ensure that it dries quickly.
Because the procedure is noninvasive, patients can return to their normal activities immediately following treatment. Some patients report some initial sensitivity and difficulty chewing, but these side effects typically fade within a few days.
Ensuring Longterm Oral Health
Although fillings are a quick and efficient fix for cavities, ideally they should not be necessary. Preventive dentistry is a collaborative effort between dentist and patient and plays an integral role in a healthy smile. You can lay the groundwork for a healthier smile in a number of simple ways: avoiding sugary foods, practicing attentive oral hygiene, and scheduling frequent visits to the dentist.
Repair Your Smile
While prevention is the best way to maintain oral health, fillings provide a cost-effective, non-surgical solution for tooth decay. To schedule a dental exam with Dr. Benjamin, call our Manhattan office at (212) 252-8893, our Brooklyn office at (718) 336-1109, or contact us online.
