What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that fit on the front surfaces of teeth. Since veneers completely cover flaws such as discoloration, minor chips and cracks, and crowding, they can sometimes be an alternative to teeth whitening, Invisalign®, and porcelain crowns. Veneers are made of translucent, tooth-colored porcelain that looks amazingly natural. Since veneers are custom-crafted to suit each patient’s unique appearance, no two sets of veneers are identical. Patients can enjoy beautiful, balanced smiles with teeth that look and feel natural.
Placement of Porcelain Veneers
The placement process for veneers typically takes two visits to our offices located in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The teeth are prepared for porcelain veneers during the first visit, at which time the dentist begins by administering a local anesthetic. The numbing effect is monitored throughout treatment to keep the patient completely comfortable. Once the mouth is numb, the dentist shaves away a tiny portion of each tooth to be treated to accommodate the veneers. Next, he makes a mold of the teeth and mouth, which he sends to the dental laboratory that will craft the veneers. Finally, he places temporary veneers, which the patient wears until the permanent ones are ready, typically in about one or two weeks. During the second visit, the dentist again begins by administering anesthetic. He then removes the temporary veneers and carefully bonds the permanent ones to the teeth. Finally, he adjusts the veneers to fit the patient’s natural teeth and bite, and buffs them to a shine.
LUMINEERS®
All American Smile Dental Studios provides patients in the New York City area – Manhattan, Brooklyn, and beyond – with LUMINEERS®, a type of no-preparation porcelain veneers. Since LUMINEERS® do not require reduction of the tooth structure, the procedure is reversible, which makes it an attractive option for many patients looking to enhance their smile. The placement process is similar to that of conventional veneers except that, in the first office visit, the teeth are not shaved down before the mold is made and, in the second visit, the veneers are bonded directly to the front surfaces of teeth. LUMINEERS® are very thin – about the size of a contact lens – and generally do not add excessive bulk to the patient’s smile.
